Fortnites 8.1.0 patch notes are up, and they have a big change for Switch users.
Fortnite Patch Notes
Battle Royale Crossplay MatchmakingCombined Xbox One and PS4 pools. This requires you to opt-in to cross-play. Players opt-ing out are restricted to Creative Mode and Playgrounds. Combined Mobile and Switch pools. Before, Switch players were combined with Xbox One and PS4 cross-play parties. We expect an on-average better per-game experience for both Mobile and Switch players. Motivating factor is unlocking optimization potential allowing us to run more playlists during more hours of the day while supporting more data center locations.

This change is sure to be divisive. On one hand playing on Switch with 30FPS against players on Xbox and PS4 with 60FPS means that you’re at a disadvantage. However taking us out of those pools means less players to play with. Will it take longer to get a match up and running on the Switch? Perhaps, but I don’t think I’ve ever waited longer than 30 seconds for a match to start in the game, so perhaps that isn’t a real issue. At the very least now we’ll be fighting against people using touch screen. Which feels like a huge disadvantage to them.
What do you think of the change?
